Baratti e Populonia

Populonia, ancient town of Etruria, dominates the Gulf of Baratti. Numerous Etruscan and Roman reminders can be found in Baratti and Populonia. The Archaeological Park,  with its 80 hectare, can ben visited along organized paths, history and archeology coexist in a beautiful and unspoiled landscape. In the Park can be seen the Etruscan remains of industrial buildings, The San Cerbone Necropolis, unique Etruscan necroplis built in front of the sea with its tumuli and aedicola tombs (7th – 4th centuries BC), The Caves Necropolis with chamber tombs dug out of the rock.

Populonia, beautiful mediaeval village, still retains its walls, which were erected to defend against  the incursions of barbary pirates, and  the Fortress, built during the first half of the XV century under Jacopo II Appiani.

The Gulf of Baratti, fine sandy beach with reddish and silvery-black color ( remains of Etruscan metal working, in particular hematite dust, scrap from iron work, fragments of Etruscan furnaces) that shines under the sun rays. Cliffs and small romantic coves with clear water.
